In-Conversation: On Not Knowing as Pedagogy

A free event from University of the Arts London

Date: 26/04/2024 – 26/04/2024

Time:17:00

This conversation between Barbara Steveni of Artist Placement Group (APG) and Brian Chalkley
(MAFA course dir. at Chelsea) focuses on APG’s ‘Not Knowing’ in
relation to Chalkley’s pedagogical methods for teaching on the MAFA
course at Chelsea College of Arts.  The conversation will be facilitated
by Jo Melvin.

‘Not Knowing’ is a key method of the ‘Open Brief’ which was used by APG to allow artists to respond to the context they had been placed in as an ‘Incidental Person’. Placed within the institutional context of Chelsea College of Arts, ‘Not Knowing’ draws parallels with the teaching practices of Chalkley who encourages artists to look outside of their practice in order to understand their real interests in art making. In addition, Chalkley’s method is aimed at questioning the effect of institutional thinking on artists’ understanding of their own practice. The in-conversation is a reflection on Chelsea College of Arts and Steveni’s proposition to utilise APG methods set within an educational institution of art.

Join us for drinks after the discussion to celebrate Chelsea College of Arts 10th anniversary at Millbank.
