Cultural Connectors

LEAN wants to ensure that every school and educational facility in the borough is kept informed about the news and exciting opportunities that are on offer. There are currently 167 Cultural Connectors in Lewisham!

We want to ensure that every school and educational facility in the borough is kept informed about the news and exciting opportunities that are on offer. To support this information sharing we are looking for Cultural Connectors!

Cultural Connectors are members of staff from each and every school in the borough. They will receive regular communications from LEAN through newsletters, be invited to Cultural Connector events in Lewisham and invited to LEAN’s AGM.

Register your school, early years setting, or college as a Cultural Connector here.

Next Cultural Connectors Meeting at Catford Library February 25th 2025 with Spread the Word

Come and join LEAN and Spread the Word to find out more about the campaign to make Lewisham, the UK’s first Borough of Literature and how your school could be involved!

The meeting will be an opportunity to have a conversation about and help shape what a Borough of Literature could look like for children, young people and teachers in Lewisham. Some of the things we would love to talk to you about are:

  • How you may already be working with local writers, poets and spoken word artists in your school;
  • What your priorities are in terms of literacy, writing and reading for your children and young people;
  • What types of creative writing and reading projects you would like to see happen and what the barriers are to them taking place.

As part of the session you’ll meet our guest poet, take part in creative writing exercises and hear them read from their work.

Arrive, tea, coffee and register 4pm

Meeting starts 4.30pm

Meeting ends 6.15pm

Based at The Albany in Deptford, Spread the Word is London’s literature development agency, a charity and an Arts Council England National Portfolio Organisation. Our mission is to help London’s underrepresented writers get their work into the world and connect communities to words and stories. We run the annual Deptford Literature Festival, the Young Writers Collective and community-based projects across Lewisham.

Don’t miss out on this chance to connect and collaborate!

On 10th October 2024, LEAN partnered with the Migration Museum’s learning team for a teacher’s preview/guided tour of their latest exhibition running from September 2024 to late 2026. Teachers found out about plans for a set of resources exploring Lewisham’s rich migration stories and heard about plans for a new menu of workshops and how to sign up for a free pilot for your school! The LEAN team updated on the Lewisham Cultural Education Partnership. Thank you to our friends at the Migration Museum for hosting this event with us.
On 25th June 2024 LEAN held a Cultural Connectors’ meeting at the Broadway Theatre Catford. We had a brilliant behind the scenes tour of the theatre and special introduction to this autumn’s upcoming production of Hamlet with Peter Stickney, the director the Lord Chamberlain’s Men Theatre Company. Attendees enjoyed a workshop with Peter, gaining an insight into the company’s working methods. Thank you to all the Broadway team for your warm welcome and to Peter.
On March 6th 2024 we partnered with Cockpit Studios Deptford to host our spring meeting for teachers and those working in educational setting with children and young people. Those who came along attended a special view of Cockpit’s new Learning Centre and heard about Cockpit’s offers for schools and young people. We all really enjoyed a printing taster workshop and met Cockpit’s Youth and Community Producer Chris Webb. Thank you Chris for hosting a lovely event with us!
