More and more children are starting school life with communication problems. The latest evidence gathered by the Communication Trust suggests that as many as 50% of children in areas of disadvantage have speech and language skills that are significantly less developed than those of other children of the same age.

Over the last 6 years, London Bubble has designed and delivered the award winning Speech Bubbles programme of in-school drama interventions for children in KS1 with a Speech, Language and Communication Need.

The Speech Bubbles programme supports referred children to develop Speaking, Listening and Attention skills in a fun and nurturing environment. A recent survey revealed that 78% of children participating in Speech Bubbles showed an improvement in Learning, Speaking and Listening and 70% showed behavioural improvements.

The training will be of use to anybody who works with young children including: drama practitioners, drama therapists and therapists. It will be of direct relevance to foundation stage, KS1 and lower KS2 staff, including: SENCO’s, teachers, teaching assistants and learning mentors.

The training will include:

  • How to plan, deliver and evaluate small group drama for communication.
  • A practical exploration of proven drama techniques that enrich and develop support children’s communication skills, confidence and self esteem.
  • A framework to identify children with a communication need using resources developed as part of the Hello 2011 National year of communication.
  • A resource pack including sections on planning, workshop structure, resources & activities

70% of the training will be practical and 30% theoretical. There will be opportunities for delegates to experience the drama techniques and activities and discuss how they might apply it to their setting.
