Fairbeats! ‘Music Support Worker’ training

Supporting young refugees, asylum seekers and new migrants Fairbeats! is holding a training session all about becoming a Fairbeats! Support Worker.

Posted: 08/02/2016

It’s free and takes
place on Monday 15 February 2016, 5.30pm – 7.30pm, at Trinity Laban
Conservatoire of Music and Dance.  The training session is aimed at music
leaders in the early stages of their career interested in working with
Fairbeats! to support participants from refugee, asylum seeking and new migrant
families to take part in music making across London. What is the training about?  As well as providing music activities at three refugee supplementary schools at centres in Lewisham, Kingston and Wandsworth, Fairbeats! runs a bursary fund to enable participants to access opportunities offered by other music organisations and venues.  Bursary-funded projects include Animate Youth Orchestra, Blackheath Community Childrens’ Opera and the Midi Music Company.  We also support families to attend musical performances across London.  We call these ‘next step’ opportunities.  Fairbeats! children and their families face some profound challenges, so enabling them to take part in ‘next step’ opportunities takes specialist support.  This is sometimes practical things like travelling with children to new places, but can also be emotional support such as helping them feel confident in a new environment, or supporting their musical and instrumental skills.  We are holding our first Support Worker training session to widen our pool of support leaders and to embed the requirements of the role.  The training will cover all aspects of this work from practical issues on the day to supporting Fairbeats! participants in the room at next step opportunities.
