Local project Made in Lewisham Celebrating & Sharing Tamil Heritage wins National Lottery Support

We are thrilled to have received support thanks to National Lottery players, and we are confident the project will help to support Lewishams amazing Tamil Community to share their unique cultural heritage with a wider audience.

Today Lewisham based community interest company Story Matters has received £9,400 from the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) for an exciting project based in the borough called Made in Lewisham Celebrating & Sharing Tamil Heritage. Made possible by money raised by National Lottery players, the project will support the Tamil Community to collect, celebrate and share their cultural heritage with a wider audience in Lewisham and beyond.
The project will see the Tamil Community deliver Explorer sessions, based around the Festival of Diwali, at The Horniman Museum in October. As well as this, a collection of stories and artefacts from the Community will be uploaded onto the Made in Lewisham Historypin site, and a schools digital resource pack will be made available to primary schools in the borough. Members of the Tamil community will receive training in storytelling and they, along with volunteers from the wider community, will also receive training in oral history collection.
It is estimated that there are about 8,000 members of the Tamil Community currently living in Lewisham and this project working with The Horniman Museum, professional storytellers and oral history experts, will increase their capability to share their vibrant cultural heritage and raise their profile in the borough now and in the future.
Made in Lewisham is a community-led initiative celebrating everything that is great about the London Borough of Lewisham its community, its creativity and its rich and exciting cultural heritage. An initiative led by Story Matters, a not for profit community interest company based in Lewisham.
