Active music listening in Early Years

The Youth Music Network team research into early years

Posted: 10/03/2022

What kinds of music
do three-year-olds prefer? Nursery rhymes? Sam Smith? The Frozen soundtrack on
a loop? Mac Makes Music’s Tune into Listening action research project
(supported by Youth Music and in partnership with several Children’s Centres and
nurseries) spent a year exploring young children’s listening preferences, how they listen, and
how music can be used effectively in Early Years settings.

The online resource has been
designed so that you can easily look at areas which particularly interest you:
simply scroll down and click on one of the tiles at the bottom, with topics
including Movement, Identity and Listening Skills. The resource
shares the findings of the research project – including film footage of
children’s responses – and offers ideas for teachers and music leaders.

We hope you enjoy finding out more about this fascinating project and trying
out some of the practical suggestions to develop active listening. And do let
us know your experiences (either as an education professional or a parent!)
with a comment or post on the Youth Music Network.
