This Thing we call Artist Development AN EVENT

CALL FOR CONTRIBUTIONS/ PROVOCATIONS, Ovalhouse

Open Until:

Posted: 03/10/2015

At Ovalhouse, we spend a lot of time thinking about how we work with
artists: what’s useful, what’s annoying and what we are missing.

We think we’re probably not the only people asking ourselves these
questions. We want to create a space for discussion about this thing we
call ‘artist development’. What does it mean? Why is it important? And
how could we all take a small bit of responsibility for it working a bit
better?

We want to curate a day of practical thinking by the under, over and
artificially-developed; the powerless, powercrazed and lovers of power
ballads; the artists, companies, venues, audiences and other
stakeholders involved in this strange process.

We’ll kick off the day with a kind of polyphonic plenary, a series of contributions that we’re putting out an open call for:

We’re looking for artists, producers, programmers, funders, critics, audience members and other human beings to offer either

  • a 5 minute provocation, question, or talking point
  • a 15 minute paper, manifesto or analysis

These can be as performative/ academic/ practical/ informal as you
want. They’ll take place in Ovalhouse’s downstairs theatre, and will
need to work with minimal tech support.

Please send a 200 word summary of what you’d like to present
(including whether it’s 5 or 15 minutes) to programming@ovalhouse.com by
9am on 30 March 2015. Please put ‘Artist Development Thing’ and your
name in the subject line of the email.

Please include telephone and email contact details in your
submission. We can pay a small fee of £100 for each contribution
selected.
