This summer Deptford Film Club is running a course for young people (18-25), training them to organise a festival of popular world cinema, while learning about the many film cultures of Lewishams multicultural population. We are now looking for an enthusiastic teacher to help deliver the training in late June/early July 2012.

THE PROJECT
We are going to work with young people from the London Borough of Lewisham (aged 18-25), as well as their friends, families and neighbours. Over eight 2-hour sessions, they will gain an overview of popular world cinema, consider how films express national and cultural values, and then plan a four-night festival of popular cinema (perhaps from Vietnam, China, Nigeria, the Caribbean, south India; the participants will decide).
They will:
- learn the technical and legal aspects of running film events
- design and carry out a survey of local fans of Vietnamese/Chinese/Nigerian (etc) film to discover the top films that residents would like to see at the festival
- liaise with distributors to source and licence the films
- plan the event venue, equipment, catering and marketing
- run the festival at the end of July to coincide with the start of the Olympic Games.
The film screenings will take place in a local venue, attracting up to 1000 audience members.
As a legacy for the project, we have agreed with Resolution Studios to run a year of bi-monthly film events from August 2012, which will take up the baton of the festival in July. We will also encourage the participants to set up their own film screening projects (which may result, for example, in their own festival of Nigerian film, or their own South Indian Film Club).
The project is being supported by Lewisham Council through their Take Part Extra fund, which offers an opportunity for arts organisations to deliver special activities to mark the Olympic and Paralympic Games in 2012. The aim is to provide additional investment to existing programmes to create innovative, extra-ordinary activities that engage Lewisham residents.

WHO WE ARE
Deptford Film Club has been running film screening events since February 2010. In October 2010, we ran Nollywood Now, the UKs first ever festival of Nigerian film.
Phoenix Fry, the organisations creative coordinator, has over seven years experience of developing and delivering training for young people in the UK, India, Egypt, Tunisia and Thailand. As co-producer of the New Cross + Deptford Free Film Festival, he has provided training, support and infrastructure to event organisers. He is currently completing an MA in Creative Entrepreneurship, specialising in popular world cinema.
Phoenix will manage the project and co-deliver the training. The young participants will manage the film screening events themselves, with support from the two project trainers.
WHY WE’RE DOING THIS PROJECT
Because the term world cinema is synonymous with intellectual, arthouse cinema, we in Britain rarely value popular film from around the world (apart from Hollywood, of course). Deptford Film Club believes that a multicultural city benefits from the popular cultures of all its citizens. Indeed, we believe that by learning about our neighbours cultures, we get to acknowledge the similarities between us, and discover the differences.
