Volunteers to facilitate Roots of Empathy programme in primary schools in Lewisham

Family Pathways, Lewisham Roots of Empathy volunteer programme:

We are half way through our 2014/15 programme in Lewisham
primary schools and the next volunteer instructor training will be in September
2015. The 2015/16 programmes start in October/November later this year.

At the heart of the programme are classroom visits by a parent and
baby. Through guided observations (by the trained instructor) of this loving
relationship, children learn to identify and reflect on their own thoughts and
feelings and those of others – developing emotional literacy and empathy.
Independent evaluations consistently show children who receive Roots of
Empathy experience dramatic and lasting effects in terms of increased
positive social behaviour (sharing, helping and including) and decreased
aggression.

Instructors are volunteers but are given full training in the
autumn and they receive on-going mentor support. They are paid a small amount
for travelling and subsistence expenses, for each session they deliver. They
deliver the programme over 27 weeks to the same class in one school over the
school year, usually starting in October/November and finishing in June. Attached is some information about the instructor roles and responsibilities.

There are 3 full days of initial training plus one more day mid year, usually
in February. After the training you are very well supported by a mentor. There is an
application process to go through but that is run by the very friendly Roots of
Empathy people in Canada, they would chat to you on the phone for a telephone interview.

Email to add your details to be contacted once the application process is available this year.
