It’s that time of year again! Applications are now open for Cockpit Awards and Bursaries. For four decades, Cockpit has provided funded and subsidised studio spaces in London for talented craftspeople, along with in-house business support and coaching. The ALMAW Award returns to Cockpit for a second round this year. Dedicated to the memory and talents of Alan White (1939–2022) and Maureen White (1939–2026), the Award supports a skilled maker working in wood or textiles to develop their practice at Cockpit, with two years of shared studio space and business support.
Makers working in textiles can also apply for the Broderers’ Award, which supports a maker with technical skills in hand embroidery to develop their practice within a business setting. This one-year Award provides the space and time for the Awardee to develop their skills, gain confidence, and build their profile, with the successful maker working towards establishing and growing their hand embroidery practice as a business.
For makers working across a range of traditional craft skills, the Arts Society GLA Bursaryoffers one year of business support and subsidised shared studio space at Cockpit, and is open to a craftsperson using traditional craft skills or working in a craft that is at risk of dying out.
Alongside this, the Basketmakers’ Award supports two basketmakers to start up and grow as independent makers and business owners. This one-year Award is open to basketmakers working in any craft discipline who demonstrate entrepreneurial spirit, creative excellence, and developed craft skills.
Craftspeople working in warm or cold glass can apply for the Glass Sellers’ Bursary, which assists makers who demonstrate dedication to developing and nurturing their craft to a level of excellence, as well as an interest in passing on their skills.
And finally, the Turners’ Award is designed for aspiring or established turners – people who practise the art and craft of turning on a lathe in wood or other materials. The Award provides the space and time to grow a business, increase profitability, and develop a maker’s profile, and includes access to Cockpit Deptford’s purpose-built Wood Hub, equipped with wood equipment for shared use.
