You are invited to propose a piece of
public art which includes a high quality, visually representative portrait of
Asquith Gibbes and a depiction of his work in Lewisham.
It has been requested that the portrait
itself is a metal or stone based relief/cameo or sculpture. Other mediums
could be used around the portrait to depict the story of his work and
influence in Lewisham.

About Asquith Gibbes
Born in Grenada, as a young man Asquith started out as a broadcaster and worked for the BBC. He arrived in the UK in the late 1950s and worked in Lewisham for 40 years fighting racial inequalities in education, policing and housing with a particular focus on support for young people.
He was an emeritus governor at Lewisham College where a building was subsequently named after him. He was a member of the Independent Advisory Group on Race at New Scotland Yard, Chair of Lewishams Community Police Consultative Group for 18 years and founded Lewishams Police Independent Advisory Group.
Asquith was an advisor on Stop and Search to the Association of Chief Police Officers and the Home Office. The Lewisham Metropolitan Police established the Asquith Gibbs Award for Community Cohesion in his memory. Asquith chaired Millwall Anti-Racist Trust and instigated the Kick it Out programme at Millwall Football Club in 1993, which was later adopted by the National Football Association and has become a widely acknowledged successful national campaign, Kick the Racism out of Football.
His MBE was awarded in 2009 for 30 years of service to the police, schools and the community on race relations. Asquith was rich in personality, full of dignity and characterised by his love of knowledge, debate and oratory.
