Discover Children’s Story Centre is the UK’s first hands-on creative space for children aged 0-11 years and their families dedicated to generating a love of language, literature and stories. Based in Stratford, east London young Story Builders enter a labyrinth of environments designed to stimulate curiosity and imagination. Children cross the Trip Trap Bridge, delve into the Sparkly Forest, play in Polka Dot Sounds, explore the Story Garden and listen to stories in different languages. We invite exciting artists from many disciplines; authors, illustrators, poets, musicians, visual artists, storytellers, puppeteers, photographers and film-makers to work with children and their carers to create new ways of telling and sharing stories. Each year over 100,000 people benefit from our programmes.

10th Birthday Commission

In 2013, Discover celebrates ten years since we opened to the public. During the first week of October we are planning a series of events to celebrate our birthday. Our Children’s Forum are working with us to create a week of celebrations. On the weekend of the 5th and 6th of October we are planning a building-wide celebration of 10 years of telling and making stories in east London. For this period, we want to commission some new story-based performances/installations/games for our spaces. These pieces should explore the imaginative possibilities of storytelling in immersive environments, working with the support of our team and, at the right points, in dialogue with children.

The Commissions

We are looking to commission two or three short storytelling pieces, interactive installations or physical games that could lead families through our different spaces. The aim of the commission is to encourage families to play and create stories together.

The commissioned work could be performer-less, or could involve one or a number of performers. They could use new technology or cardboard, the key element is they make people play and interact with each other.
