Every year the National Gallery’s Take One Picture scheme for primary schools focuses on a painting from the collection to inspire cross curricular learning in primary classrooms. This year it is ‘Experiment on a Bird in the Air Pump’ 1768 by Joseph Wright of Derby.
During January the entire school from Nursery to Year 6 explored this painting in many exciting ways.Painting, textiles, collage, photography and sculpture were used in lots of science-based learning to produce an inspiring exhibition.
The whole school project encouraged the children to delve into the world of scientific investigation. Research into air pollution, moon phases, nocturnal insects and light, to name just a few, were some of the starting points for the children to make real and meaningful connections. See what happens when all the birds escape and start to fly around our hall!
Beecroft Garden School is located in Beecroft Road, Brockley, SE4 2BS.

Buses 171, 172, 122 all stop very close to the school. Get off at stop Dalrymple Road. The closest mainline train station is Crofton Park. There is free parking in all roads around the school.
