Come to Goldmiths College and explore how
young people choose their GCSE and A Levels – and its roots, myths and implications. Speakers will offer different perspectives followed by breakout
discussions. There will be an opportunity for individuals to pledge a small
(or large) way they might be able help dispel myths and misinformation, and
find solutions. The evening will end with refreshments and a chance to chat
with fellow attendees.

Pauline
Tambling CBE, CEO
at Creative and Cultural Skills. Until April 2009, Pauline was Chief Operating
Officer of Creative and Cultural Skills. She previously worked at Arts Council
England in five senior roles with a wide range of responsibilities and led
several major initiatives. She is Chair of Shape (an arts and disability
organisation in London), a member of the Clore Leadership Programme
Strategic Advisory Committee and a member of North Hertfordshire
College Board (NHC). Pauline was awarded a CBE in the Queen’s
Birthday Honours list in 2014. Pauline will draw on her extensive
experience and talk on creative sector growth, career routes and more.
Steve
Moffitt, CEO of A New Direction (AND). AND work with partners to create positive
change across schools, education and communities to ensure that young people
get the most out of London’s extraordinary creative and cultural offer. Steve will talk on the barriers to a
career in the arts.
Wyn Griffiths BA, MSc, FRSA, Senior Lecturer, Middlesex
University, Department of Design Engineering and Mathematics, School of Science
and Technology: Wyn
Griffiths is course leader on the BA/BSc product design at Middlesex University
and Co-Founder/Co-Director of award winning SMASHfestUK (a STEM/arts Festival). As a HE lecturer, Wyn will talk on whether
studying a broad range of subjects (including the arts) is a benefit or barrier
to HE entry in non arts subjects. Professor Michael Archer is Head of Undergraduate Studies in the
Art Department at Goldsmiths, and Programme Leader of the BA Fine Art
programme. Before joining Goldsmiths he was Head of School at the Ruskin School
of Art, Oxford University, and prior to that he was Senior Lecturer at Chelsea
College of Art and Design (UAL). His extensive teaching experience covers all
levels from Foundation, through Undergraduate and Postgraduate to doctoral
research, and extends from the studio to art and design history and theory. A
critic and writer, he is author of numerous books, essays and articles on
modern and contemporary art. Michael will talk about the
changes to art and design in school and the impact for those who wish to study
Art at University level.Catherine Sercombe
is Head of Arts Programmes at Trinity College London. Trinity College
London are an international exam board for performing arts and English Language
qualifications. Catherine is responsible for the national delivery of
Arts Award – a unique set of awards that support young people to develop as
artists and arts leaders. Arts Award is managed by Trinity in association
with Arts Council England. Catherine will talk about the impact Arts
Award has on young people’s career choices, skills development and interactions
with the arts and cultural sector, identified through research carried
out by London South Bank University.
