Alternative Finance in the UK: What we know and where it’s going

Nesta and Cambridge University are launching the largest study ever of crowdfunding and other forms of alternative finance in the UK.

Date: 19/04/2024 – 19/04/2024

Time:14:00

This event will present key findings from the study, including key figures on total size of the UK alternative finance industry (covering both P2P lending, Equity, Donation and Rewards crowdfunding and other niche alternative finance models). Based on surveys of people who have used alternative finance to fund and fundraise projects, we will present new research on the motivations and behaviours of people using alternative finance.

Breakout sessions: Building on the findings from the research we will use the event to explore the future of alternative finance in the UK in three ways:  When registering, you will be asked to select one of the following three sessions:

 1. More than money? – This workshop will explore if the crowd can deliver ‘more than money’ to projects, from commenting on design of products when during live campaigns through to contributing their own time and non-financial resources to make projects a reality.

2. Matched funding – Hear about how matched funding is being used to increase giving as companies and funders seek to get extra benefits and make funds go further by tapping into the crowd.

3. Beyond the raise – Hear about how alternative finance providers are driving entrepreneurship in the  UK and about the challenges of turning the momentum generated from a successful fundraising campaign into a viable business. The day will end with a networking reception with crowdfunded food and drinks.

The day will end with an announcement of Nesta’s future work on Alternative Funding at an evening reception with food and drink from crowdfunded companies.
